Our Causes
Current Initiatives
Thondwe, Malawi
We have a long-term partnership with Thondwe Primary School, which has 2,000 learners and 35 teachers. We raise money to support a variety of critical improvement projects, in collaboration with other Rotary clubs and community partners. Most recently we have bought desks to lift school children off the floor and onto desks.
English in Ukraine
We’re delighted to be supporting ENGin, which pairs Ukrainian English learners with volunteers for free online conversation practice and cross-cultural connections. Our member Rebecca volunteers as an English speaking buddy for a Ukrainian living in Ivano-Frankivsk. She was introduced to the organization at a Rotary meeting. They meet online for an hour once a week, and are having fantastic conversations about all sorts of topics.
Environment
We have a special focus on environmental initiatives. Our club has recently taken a pledge to play our part in reducing plastic waste. We also enjoy cleaning up our local communities. To mark World Environment Day and the Clean Up Scotland initiative, a few of our members did their bit in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders.
Community
We encourage members to help in their local communities. This has included making face masks during the covid pandemic, volunteering with local community organisations, promoting and collecting for local food banks, and supplying benches for a local primary school. Our member Judith folded, stuffed, and sealed 1200 envelopes for the Wildlife in Need Center in Oconomowoc, WI.
Charity Fundraising
Members support local, national and international charities with a wide variety of fundraising events, as well as supporting other Rotary Clubs with their community fundraising. Our associate member Denis rode to support Prostate Cancer Scotland.
Pride of Workmanship Australia
The primary object of this award is to encourage Pride of Workmanship by providing employers with the opportunity, through Rotary, of recognising and acknowledging the efforts and contributions of an employee who consistently achieves an overall high personal standard and work performance. Our member Martin has presented several awards to worthy recipients.
Past Project Highlights
Water Purification
We joined forces with the Rotary Club of Accra-Tesano in Ghana to provide a water filtration solution for school pupils and families of the Tsledom community.
Run4Reforestation
We participated in the Run4Reforestation fundraiser for Zomba TREEZ to protect and preserve the environment on the Zomba plateau in Malawi.
Royal National Lifeboat Institution
We did a cash collection for the RNLI at Edinburgh's Waverley train station.
Poppyscotland
We joined the Rotary Club of Corstorphine to raise funds at Edinburgh Airport for Poppyscotland.
Train Station Plants
In partnership with the Rotary Club of Edinburgh, we adopted the Edinburgh Park train station and helped them maintain plants.
The Backpack Project
We provided some prize money at the German Rotaract Convention to purchase backpacks for African schoolchildren through The Backpack Project of Mary’s Meals.
Marie Curie
We did street collections for the Great Daffodil Appeal for Marie Curie.
Community One Stop Shop
We collected food from customers in a local supermarket/grocery store to donate to the Community One Stop Shop in Broomhouse, Edinburgh.
Education in Ethiopia
We sent a supply of pens and pencils to a school in Jinka, Ethiopia.
End Polio Now
We held an art auction at our District Convention with all proceeds going to Rotary's End Polio Now project.
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland
We have volunteered for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland at a charity abseil from the iconic Forth Bridge and at their annual fundraising quiz.
